KDE - Icons gone

Today when I log in, my KDE desktop icons are all missing, and while I can 
click on various apps on the "KDE Start button" they all do nothing at all 
- not even an error message.

If I select Gnome or any of the other interfaces, everything works.  If I 
login as another user, the KDE icons appear and the "KDE Start button" 
apps all work fine too.

Any ideas on what went wrong and how I can correct it?
