"You can mount and view the file from the CLI" -- So what's the problem?
I wouldn't waste time with the GUI.
Just copy the files to some other storage device -- rsync -aP <files/dirs>
<target device>

If you cannot see/recover the files, then try 'photorec," description from
its main page
