Came upon this doc: https://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc2606.txt

It says in part:

To safely satisfy these needs, four domain names are reserved as
    listed and described below.


                    .test
                 .example
                 .invalid
               .localhost


Seems these needs have long been resolved.

Your thoughts?
