Well, remember that thumb drives aren’t really that super fast when writing, so 3 hours might be ‘to be expected’. Yeah, I know, even if it’s a super-speed device. Underneath its ‘just flash’, which does have something of a speed limit, even though certain commands are REALLY FAST (reading tends to be extremely fast, for example. Writing can be, if the device is not all ‘fragmented’ (or what amounts to being fragmented).

On the other hand, if you’re using Windows it does a full read scan to ‘test’ the device. (I’m assuming you’re not using Windows, but thought I’d mention this)

Also, writing all the super blocks and so forth takes a bit (a non-trivial bit, actually). If you could erase the stick before writing it, you might find it to be much faster. Or maybe not. So much depends upon the controller inside the stick.

Ok, so to the question of why the permissions were wrong. Were you logged in via X as yourself when you inserted the stick? If not, ownership of the stick will almost certainly not be what you wanted. (As I recall from past experiences) Also, if you were logged in, you might get the stick automounted, which you don’t want. However, if you use the GUI to unmount the stick, it does MORE than just unmount it - you are highly likely to also lose the device (/dev/sdb, for example). Instead, use ‘umount’ (possibly as root) to unmount the device.

I think you can set some options in /etc/fstab to make the ownership right, or maybe udev rules, or somewhere, but I’ve always just been lazy and become root….

That worked but why was the permission wrong?

There's a good chance your drive is dead. But try changing the
permissions. It might just be that you don't "own" the drive.

Check the ownership info using `ls -la`
If the owner is root, change it to your user with
`sudo chown youruser:youruser /path/to/drivemount -R`
