Subject: RE: Looking for a VPN Provider
Mark, I haven't had the opportunity to test connections from outside the US to servers inside the US. However, I have done the opposite, just to check out connection speeds, latency, etc. When connecting PIA to intra-US servers I see latency in the low 100s, which is basically what my crap Internet service does even without PIA VPN connected. When connecting to various EU-based servers I would see latency go up to the 300s, which is about what one would expect. In short, it didn't seem to me that PIA added any noticeable latency over what you might expect from connections without it.

PIA is great for the VPN aspect (encrypting data), and it sounds like you're interested in it for the ability to use US-only streaming services from Europe, but there's even another aspect to PIA which I think is probably important to a lot of us on this list: privacy. PIA does really well in the areas of logging, retaining connection information, etc. -- (which is to say, they don't do any of that). One of the privacy aspects that really impressed me was the ability to pay with any number of gift cards, so that even your purchase of PIA was totally anonymous. Go to Target and buy a gift card with cash, use that card to pay for PIA, and not even your purchase is tied to a credit card, PayPal account, or other source. Really a nice aspect.

Hope this helps. Cheers.

Larry and Rusty,

Have you used PIA in Europe? Just curious about their speed when connecting to the US from Europe. Have you had any issues with streaming movies from the US while in Europe?
I must say PIA looks great - $40/year for 5 simultaneous devices using openVPN in one account is amazing compared to what I have been seeing on the net.

Thanks!

Mark

Anyone have experience with ExpressVPN? Any recommendations for another VPN provider?
My daughter will be studying in Germany this summer, and I felt she should have a VPN for her Mac and iPhone since she will be almost totally on WiFi at coffee shops.....and she wants to be able to use Netflix...;)

Thanks!

Mark
