Don't be too quick to dismiss a group just because they have a dues.
Linux groups do cost a bit of money and/or donations to run smoothly.
PLUG doesn't currently charge but this has been mostly due to a few
people that have donated thousands over the years.
Dues are usually small enough that you could feasibly find the money in
your couch and they allow the group to provide the niceties (like a
projector if the room doesn't have one) that you otherwise wouldn't
have. It can also be used for advertising dollars, travel expenses for
big name speakers...etc...etc...
