'apt--get install' not working

I open a terminal and type

sudo apt-get install lib<tab><tab>

but nothing appears.... no choices.... nothing. Just a ding. To make a long
story short I then type in;

sudo apt-get install l<tab><tab>

DING DING

... install a<tab><tab>

DING DING

something is wrong. Brain-trust of PLUG, can you help?
