hmmmm sounds like a cascade failure. The PSU died and it took both the MB and the CPU with it. I have seen that happen a lot of times. SOme of the cheaper end server MB's still suffer from the "capacitor plague" as do a lot of the mid and low end PSU's.

There are two companies I would buy PSU's from: Antec or Pc Power and Cooling. They may be more expensive but they are certainly over engineered.

As for MB's, sometimes doing a lot of legwork pays off. My rule of thumb is this: cheap is as cheap gets.
