Yes, be sure you bios allow for booting from USB.

All in all, I would not get an external USB hard drive. The bus speed is
important, doncha think?

USB is not fast!

Just go get a SATA drive? Order one online. But first be sure you have a
SATA capable mobo?

JD is right, the USB2 card or sata dock would be required.

How about a SSD drive? They are quite a bit faster? (Internal)?
