Subject: east side mtg: Linux Accessibility for the Blind
moin moin,

Time: Thursday, 2011Feb10, 19:00 to about 21:00
Topic: Linux Accessibility for the Blind
Presenter: Steve Holmes
Where: Kirk Student Center, Mesa Community College
Address: 1833 W. Southern Ave., Mesa, AZ 85202

http://PLUG.phoenix.az.us/node/222

Description: The main purpose of the presentation is to demonstrate how a
blind person can independently use a computer equipped with open source
software and further demonstrate how the assistive technology works. Also,
Steve wishes to conclude with a confirmation that blind people can not
only use these configurations, but also be productive and that they have a
right to use such.

Three assistive technologies will be demonstrated:

    1. EmacSpeak - an adaptation to the Emacs editor to make it
self-voicing.
    2. Speakup - a set of kernel modifications that cause the Linux kernel
       to speak all output.
    3. Orca - a self contained application to provide spoken output from
the GNOME desktop and its applications.

If time permits, a brief discussion of web accessibility will be given
with some simple solutions to a significant part of the web accessibility
question.

Bio: Steve is a totally blind person who has been working in the computer
programming profession for over 30 years now. Various aspects of computer
technology have always fascinated him so he persued some of them outside
the work place. This is how he became involved in Linux and other open
source and free software projects.
