one more thing - if you are using 2.05 and LDAP...
the supplied netatalk 'pam.d' module didn't work for LDAP (probably
works for /etc/passwd users but I always use LDAP now)
this, however does work with LDAP
# cat /etc/pam.d/netatalk
#%PAM-1.0
auth required pam_nologin.so
auth include system-auth
account include system-auth
session include system-auth
password include system-auth
