Compilation is a basically single-threaded task, but you can compile multiple files simultaneously to speed things up when using make.
With make the command-line flag is [-j #] to tell it how many jobs to run at once, usually you want to set that to [number of physical cores] + 1 (due to caching effects).
If you have a couple spare machines sitting around, you can even use distcc to enlist all of them to complete really big compile jobs even faster.
