I got an IBM Thinkpad about a year ago, and managed to get the Vista it
came with installed as a VMware guest. I didn't take notes, but IIRC, I

.) ran vmware converter to create vmware image
.) installed ubuntu onto a clean HD
.) installed vmware player on ubuntu
.) copied vmware image to ubuntu
.) activated Vista
Of course, the virtualization platform you choose will have a lot to do
with how you might accomplish this.
