I know, common sense, but for that one that asked 'what to do' please save any important info you want to save on external media such as cd/dvd roms or etc. Files especially when completely reformatting the hd will be lost forever if not put on other media.
To 'remove xp' totally, the whole hd will be formated in a linux format and that wipes off the files.
IF your hd is large enough, you COULD defrag the xp hd so that it uses only say 10gb or less if not tooo much files/storage...whatever it takes, then divide the hd into xp plus whatever is extra /not used for storage into a linux partition(s) and still if needed boot to xp occasionally for things that either don't work or you don't know how to get to work in linux as needed from the xp. OR just bite the bullet and buy a new hd and use that. Fry's electronics is just down the street.
Just a thought. Don't know your $$$ situation. Mine is tight!
