ARGH!
OK, I did the following:
setsebool -P httpd_can_network_connect_db=1
setsebool -P httpd_can_network_connect=1
on the Fedora9 apache server box and now it works.
Thanks all. Why this has to be off by default or not well known that
it needs to be altered from it's default state is beyond me.
