shell question

Hello Hello,

    I am looking for an explanation of what '$$' is in bash.
I can create a file or a directory, assign it to variables, but how much can I 
do before it changes, or what causes it to change?

What exactly does it mean? Searching google for '$$' returns nothing useful.
