The principled approach is good, but I personally want the best
insurance against the project dying off or future incompatibilities.
From this perspective, the number of users is the best metric. For
instance, PHP was not even close to being the best architecture for
middleware, but it reached a lot of people for a variety of reasons.
Now those people went ahead and improved PHP where it does measure up
to the competition... jmz
