Finally got a chance to bring down the box, this worked perfectly. Still don't know what the original localtime file was, but I suppose it doesn't matter.

mv /etc/localtime /etc/localtime.orig
ln -sf /usr/share/zoneinfo/GMT /etc/localtime
does that work?
