You have to install the compatability and emulation libs for 32-bit apps. I
don't know what they're called on Ubuntu. Gentoo installs them by default;
other distros can be ... less good in that regard. I don't know why this is
so, but it's sure there.

Currently, there's no benefit and a number of drawbacks to using x86_64,
unless you're using something that needs to malloc() more than 4G of RAM.
That's why I'm still using i686 on my desktop.
