Subject: June INSTALL FEST Member Thanks
I would like to send out a special thanks to everyone who contributed their hard earned experience and knowledge for the INSTALL FEST!

This is just a few people (I am terrible with names)!

Fred Mazur who brought his telecommunications expertise and helped carry.
Alan Dayley [consultpros.com] for bringing us all water, taking photos, and bringing good cheer and incredible cross platform experience.
Joseph Sinclair (Google Software Engineer) who brought PUPPY and XO media in various bus types [x86_64, x86_32, PowerPC] finely burned and neatly cased (and quickly distributed).
Josh Nalli who came along during a lull in the action for interesting discussion!
And everyone else who contributed old distros for the collection!

We had as many as 9 people watching on our camera feed at one point early Saturday morning (but our feed stalled out later and was left unnoticed - so we apologize if you tried to watch and listen in unsuccessfully). Next event, another solution will be tried and we can continue to perfect the feed until it's clear with good sound!

It was a completely fun and worthwhile day!

Thanks again!

Yes, we had about 26 people show up through the day.   12 problems were brought.

Various people showed up to contribute distros (old and new) to the collection including X0 which the OLPC is built upon for the collections.

We fixed or lively discussed the following items:

a) Gentoo: Vmware [will not start] (network DHCP address changes - static IP addressing is required for the network bridge settings).
b) Gentoo: Apache2 virtual hosting behind NAT (two virtual hosts using the same IP address - no way to translate or port forward to internal Apache2 webserver from router).
c) Gentoo: Apache2 httpd.conf and  vhosts.d. configuration files and options (can't have virtualhost *:80 for more than one virtual or the default DocumentRoot will show).
d) General: DynDns (scripts and work arounds for home based
AT&T/COX web servers).  WebHops, DNS record scripted updates, and DHCP in large egress and ingress. (Or why does my ssh still work to my home Apache2 webserver but my httpd port 80 nmaps fail [DHCP QoS = leases (for outbound and inbound network paths) are now setup to expire: 1) High traffic 2) 4 Hours in heavily loaded  congested networks  3)  if they  percieve port 80 inbound traffic . 4) Power loss or  failover.
e) Fedora 9: Installation on a fine 64 bit HP notebook for M. Kjolsrud (screaming  fast)!
f) Fedore 9: Post installation Services, Hardening and Security Notebook use on various types of Networks.
g) Turning down or protecting various services on hostile networks: sshd/NFS
h) General: Accessing Windows files from a Live CD (or how to mount -t ntfs the harddrive, to copy to a USB Jumpdrive).  [2 computers]
i) Ubuntu: Building USB keys - we all refreshed our understanding of loop
mounting ISO files, vmlinuz and initrd.gz as well as boot configuration files, paths, fdisk file types, and how to mount and build a system (even a very wee small one) from scratch. [We learned: 1)Not every USB key will work!  2) Not every Ubuntu Howto is a correct match for the mounted ISO file structure (Xubuntu for instance has no /casper directory  HO NOOS!!!!).
j) Knoppix: How to mount and resurrect a master boot record (also well described  in o"Reilly's Knoppix Hacks] for a failed dual boot Windows System.
k) Knoppix: How to mount and resurrect the password for a Windows System.
l) Netgear: Wireless networking - what a failed  configuration and flash restore do to a Netgear  VPN Router.  OpenWRT as a solution.
m) Science/Biology:  Phytochemical research using Linux systems. [Northwestern Nix-type Biology students]
n) Fedora Core BlueTooth:  How to BlueTooth to phones. Authentication
Passwords
o) Video: Brief discussion of streaming video under Linux and current limitations for various types of cheap web cameras.  Complete discussion of drivers, devices and various types of cameras under Linux is fodder for a full presentation.
p) Creativitity: Gimp as graphics toy supreme!

Thanks for everyone who brought issues to our fun geek day!
Thanks for those who assisted to setup, showed up to take photos and help foster enthusiasm for knowledge!
