I served just after Vietnam, during a pretty slack period. As I look back it was by far the 2nd best "job" I've ever had.
I hope and pray you get a good assignment and this be a great experience for you.
I thank you for your sacrifice. I know it must be tough. I cannot imagine getting settled in and then find you are called back from IRR.
Given what you are saying I think the draft might be reactivated. I've always thought the draft was the fairest way to recruit.
My payers are with you!

Ok, for some of you that don't know me, I'm the guy that looks like
I'm 18 that
usually shows up to East side meetings and almost all the Stamtiches (sp?), I
have a pretty slim build and I'm about 6 feet tall, I am single... OH I
also
like long walks on the beach :) heh. I also used to be in the army, with the
3/505 PIR (part of the 82nd Airborne in Fort Bragg, NC) I served as an Airborne
Infantryman for 3 years, I was an M-240 Bravo gunner.
Well as the subject says, I got called up from IRR to Active Duty. To summarize
when an individual signs up for the military they actually sign up for a period
of 8 years (this moved up from 6 years, back in the 80's-90's). They
serve a set
time of active (my case 3 years) which means I have 5 to serve as inactive
reserve (IRR). Its supposed to be like one step before the draft, because that
means
National guard and reserves have both been used. This was explained to me when
I
signed that I would be on IRR, but never really thought about it till now.
Recruitment is at an all time low and they _need_ people I guess. I am really
sending this just to let you all know, that I will be gone for more than a year
and that I'm not sure if I can bring my computer. It does however mean that
I
have to leave my job, friends, family, etc. School does not help in this
situation because they will/have just refunded my money.
Also I am trying to get out of this, but they are pretty hard to avoid. oh,
some
of my friends have suggested that I move to Canada, do drugs, or break my leg.
sorry....not my style. If I can I'll fill out a form for a waiver or just
go and
do my thing. I leave on July 6th if I can't get out of them.
PS for any... war planners/war game idea thinkers... (I don't know what to
call
it) they called up my MOS, 11B2P (infantry) and a lot of 35 series, which is
MI.
hmmmm.... I wonder. haha
