The basic procedure is:
* Download the latest tarball
* Apply the patches from either Debian or Ubuntu (usually I do Ubuntu
but you can try the Debian ones since you're concerned about stability,
etc.)
* run dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot
* Check for errors, etc.
