I thought http://xkcd.com/322/ was the standard response here,
myself.

But generally, the techs at a place that does business with the
general public aren't prepared for the types of questions and
use cases that highly technical people want. So it doesn't
really surprise me that the Sprint techs wouldn't know how to
set up a VPN.
