Yes, ubuntu does use run levels differently. Admittedly there is no
fixed standard for most levels, but I have always thought they
deviated from common usage for no good reason.
I have seen an article or posting saying that ubuntu did not handle
dual nics nicely automatically and that some manual configuration was
needed. But that was some time ago and I was not able to find the
article. I do not know if it is still true for 7.04 and 7.10 where
they really got going using NetworkManager which is fussy about the
content of /etc/network/interfaces. But for your 6.06 I don't think
it was used. Sorry I can't find that article.
OTOH, I noticed in your post there does not seem to be an auto clause
for either eth2 or eth1 which seems like it could be your problem. I
am no expert, but ...
