Found the answer using GIMP-GAP Morph function. I just morph from a
flat back ground to the current picture. I also cut the fading to ~20
FPS. I double this in the original morph and use ever other frame for
fade in and the remaining every other frame for fade out (played in
reverse order).

Subject: [ASULUG] How To request: simple fade in animated gifs - GIMP?
Can any one tell me an easy way to make an animated gif that just fades
a picture in and out from a back ground color? I have GIMP, but I can
not figure how to do this without creating each frame of the animation
by hand. Not wanting to spend several hours a frame for 600 frames I
thought I would ask the collective minds of F/OSS.
