RE: Running X on a virtual dedicated server

Ok, I have been using Linux for a long while, but in comparison to my
windows boxes most of my Linux stuff just works. On that note I am much
less experienced then many others on this list. Could you please
explain xhost+ to me?

If you're using ssh on that system then restarting sshd on that system
will have no effect. The sshd demon accepts connections to your machine
and has nothing to do with outgoing connections. That's why you can
restart sshd and it didn't affect your outgoing ssh connection.

You might also need to do an "xhost +" to allow your X server to accept
connections before your try to open up any X programs.

    I think you're confused at what you want.  You don't want X
running on
    that computer, you want the programs to display on your X server
running
    on your machine.  Try connecting like this:

    ssh -X -Y -C myhost.com

    That opens up X tunneling, sets the forward file, and does a
little
    compression for you too.

    Some SSH servers aren't set up to support X tunneling by
default, you
    may need to enable it in /etc/ssh/ssh_config
