This is all very strange. Strange as in it's hard to imagine so much
trouble with various distros, and trouble with the internet, and
everything else. It seems way too much trouble all the way around.
Really, people don't usually have this much trouble!
So, I have to wonder if there's something weird going on with some bit
of hardware, or some other single thing that's causing you so much
grief. I know you've been around the block a few times on this, and
explored lots of different things.
Would it be feasible to bring your system to installfest? Is installfest
a proper venue for debugging things like this? Sometimes when something
really funky is going on it can be found in short order by an
experienced person sitting at console, where debugging over email just
doesn't work.
Another thought, being that I'm a BSD guy, is to try out OpenBSD for
diagnostic purposes. It's not so much that OpenBSD is *better* but that
in a very real sense it's simpler. It *may* be more obvious what's going
wrong, if there's a problem with hardware. *May*. No guarantees. But if
you don't mind blowing away your Linux install yet again it might give
some clues. If you're not comfortable at a shell prompt, or if the
installation instructions scare the willies out of you, then this option
may not be for you.
And last but not least, have you tried setting up a local, caching-only
name server? I used to have no end of troubles with weird name server
behavior from cable/dsl providers. It always seemed to be fine from
Windows, but Linux/BSD had trouble, and especially Firefox had trouble.
Doing my own name server fixed it all immediately.
