openldap and db upgrade

Somewhere along the line openldap and db got upgraded.
I forced a reboot today, and guess what!

How can I upgrade my ldap databases from db 4.3 to db 4.5 ?
My method of backups was to shutdown ldap and copy the whole directory, so I
don't have the option of slapadd'ing a ldif file.

db_upgrade gives an environment error. I tried downgrading to 4.3 but it
doesn't work either. Maybe I had db 4.4.

any help?
