rc.d is a symbolic link to init.d
I believe it's there for historical purposes. Over
the years various versions of Unix have put these
critical system service startup files in various
paths, the two you see being the most common.
There may still be some system scripts and programs
that refer to both paths, so a symlink is the
easiest way to provide them both. The files
themselves are not actually duplicated.
