I used the root command. It was generally from grub started at the command
line from a booted system. I did run it once or twice between stages when
the system was booting OK and got expected mappings.

I don't think it is. The RAID setup should be irrelevant. I only mentioned
it in case there is some hidden gotcha. Since I'm using a primary
partition for / the RAID shouldn't come into the equation.
