It didn't... somehow the threads turned into a broadband discussion.
As far as your problem, my guess is that X itself recieved a signal
from somewhere in the OS and shutdown, which threw you back to the XDM
login.
As far as fixing it, unsure.
If that was me, I'd check the error logs of X.
