You can manually run iwconfig with the "essid" argument.

Or set "wireless-essid" in /etc/network/interfaces.

See /usr/share/doc/wireless-tools/README.Debian and wireless(7) man page
for some information.

I think you can probably set IF_WIRELESS_ESSID in /etc/network/interfaces
also but I didn't test that.
