well, if you have more time than money
(parent of 3... might not have a lot of time, either... hmmm...)
the Phoenix library does have "inter-library loan" provisions.
One time a book that I wanted, was so popular that
all nn copies of it were checked out, so I was able to request
it as an "inter-library loan", and a copy arrived from somewhere
in Kansas. I am not sure whether that was the closest...
anyway, I also found that I was not necessarily limited to
books that the Phoenix library had, since they could get some
via "inter-library loan".
As far as
what books to get/read,
all I can say is, based on the Movie "You've Got Mail",
the advice that you might [not] be getting from a book store,
might not be the best anyway. You might be better off with
rec.arts.books on usenet (do folks still use that?) or some
other forum. Actually, someone else on PLUG might have
some suggestions. (more than I did).

Well, two places you might start looking,
www.acm.org
and the IEEE computer society.
Good luck with this,
