compile kernel and modules:

The kernel source was not in the proper directory so I downloaded one
but 'make menuconfig' doesn't work.

You might just check your distro's update servers for a newer kernel, that
would probably be easier. If you want to compile your kernel with or without
certain modules, run make
menuconfig<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Menuconfig>from the kernel
source directory.
