For compiling kernels there are probably many pages. Here's one from
the gentoo handbook. some of the info at the beginning and end are
gentoo specific but it's got all the kernel stuff in there too.

For a soundblaster you shouldn't have to compile anything. sb is pretty
standard. run
modprobe snd_sb sb
one of those drivers should work. snd_sb is the alsa version. sb is
the older oss version.
