I would expect that you can get a PCI sound card from Fry's for like $10

Assuming that you completely don't value your time and thoroughly want
the experience and knowledge gained from compiling your own kernel - 2.6
style, with everything that it entails (kernel modules, initrd), you
might be better served by the Mepis lists that can direct you to the
sources and gotchas or else, get vanilla kernel at kernel.org (not my
recommendation) and visit www.tldp.org for methodologies to compile your
own kernel.

First time compiling your own kernel time estimate 3 - 15 hours
