Patrick,
I'm not a java guy, but.. I find eclipse a really
good IDE on both windows and linux. There are other
good ones out there to.. whatever you pick, definitely
focus on knowing the language. (don't be a code/script
monkey.) programing without and IDE is a good way to
test yourself.
