USB *-IN-1 card readers

I am having a problem with a card reader. When I plug it in, dmesg sees the
device and shows any cards plugged into it, which I have only one. It shows a
sd: sda1 which is correct. Afterwards, I can not open the card. fdisk says it
is invalid, the permissions are fine, but I'm root anyway...

Is something special required to r/w card readers? This is my first attempt at
a usb media device other than a thumb drive.
