Zabbix is probably overkill for what hes doing. Its a whole NMS system.
If you're going that route, and have a box to throw at the problem,
check out Hyperic (
www.hyperic.com). Its a bit weighty, but looks
nice, and source was just released today.
Otherwise, if you want to see what's on the wire for real, you need a
sniffer (ethernet card in promiscuous mode + ethereal [or something
like it]).
If you're just trending system stats, check out munin. Its 100x
easier to setup than cacti.
