Subject: Re: First Linux Experience
Back in '94 or '95, I picked up both a slackware and freebsd cd from a
computer store in San Jose. Okay, so I was spoiled for once, so what?
;) Both booted up, but I couldn't get them to go from there. They
collected dust while I reformatted a freshly installed Win95 (after 1
month of running and crash 'n burn) with OS/2. Several months later, a
friend of mine (i think someone else was saying something about this...
quite true, in many cases :) ) came over and helped me install Redhat
4.1 in '97, and it worked. The installation was fairly smooth and I had
no idea how he got X to work. I eventually found 4.2 and was impressed
with it for awhile, until I ripped it apart until I was running a
frankenstein box with mostly source code.

This prompted the attempt at Slackware (version 3.0) again in '98, which
worked out fine and ran smoothly, for the most part, until '00, when I
had no choice but to install Debian on a stinkpad, er, thinkpad 750.
Nothing else would boot on it. I was instantly hooked, and within a
month I had my workstation migrated to Debian, with the server following
a few months later. And so Debian has been my choice ever since.

I've tried
suse/gentoo/ubuntu/mepis/knoppix/kanotix/mandrake/mandriva/fedora/damn
small linux and they all have their good points. Debian is rock solid
and, like PLUG, is 100% community oriented. These factors make it my
trusty companion as an OS. At work, I mix linux and winblows as support

When I showed up to PLUG late last year, OpenOffice presentations were
dominant and there was a healthy mix of people with experience in many
different distributions. I really enjoyed the meetings, but work/school
has kept me at bay. Perhaps soon, I will be attending some west side
meetings if I can schedule it in.

And thank you Alan for doing what you've done, PLUG is a better group
because of it! :)
