Maybe something like:
strace gcc somefile.c
You might also need strace -s 255 for long strings.

That might be part of your problem.
Do you also have /usr/lib/gcc-lib/i386-redhat-linux/3.4.5/cc1?
Or another location for gcc 3.4.5's cc1?
(Notice the 3.4.5 versus 3.2.3.)
