I have now diagnosed the problem. I have found that certain settings
of video card parameters cause KDE to lose the keyboard. On my old
nVidia, for example, a setting of 1024 x 768 at 24-bit color is good,
while 1024 x 768 at 16-bit color loses the keyboard.
