Subject: Fedora Core X startup
I have a small irritation (actually one of many) with Fedore Core 4. When I
start X, or log in from gdm, it pauses for 2 minutes or more while the
"starting metacity" icon is showing, then when it passes that, the display
comes up normally but mouse does not work for another couple of minutes. Once
it starts responding, everything seems normal.

I was wondering if anyone had seen this or had an idea where to look. I can
switch to a console and log in fine. I looked over the process list but
didn't see anything that appeared to be in an unusual state.

I should mention, this problem does not seem to exist if I log on as root and
then startx. It has been constant since I installed, through a number of
upgrades including xorg, and through several default and custom kernels.

I compared the xorg log file from a run as root and from a user login. I
didn't see any differences that seemed important.

I don't mind digging in, I just don't know where to look.

I would be happy to dump Fedora, or at least try out Core 5. But I have to
run some software that's only rated for 4.
