hardware advice: amd X2, etc

Hi,

I am long overdue for a new desktop. I'd like to
build something nice for once. I'm looking at an AMD
X2 3800+ with an asus MB.

I run Fedora Core, which seems to support the dual
core chips. Can anyone talk about hardware support for
dual core chips and new motherboards with SLI?
Anything I should avoid or be careful of in picking
components?
