Re: syncing home partitions

Yes, but I'm not certain how reliable it is.

rsync, especially with a wrapper like unison is a good choice.
Autoupdating into some revision control system like SVN is another good
idea.

No need to unmount. Open files would make unmounting inpractical anyway.
Open files don't interfere with backups on *NIX as there is no read lock.

If you have db files you need to do backups as specified by the db and
then backup the backups.
