if you are using grub you can append "single" to the "kernel" line for a
given kernel ... check these instructions:
http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/RHL-7.3-Manual/custom-guide/s1-rescuemode-booting-single.html
this will bring you into single user mode.
