The patents on the compression method used in GIF have expired some time
ago. It was just the principal of support community efforts such as PNG
that won the discussion.
JPG is currently threatened with patent issues now so it is bothersome
too. (Darn submarine patent jerks!)
Practically speaking, we will probably end up using all three formats
but, when we can, we want to use PNG.
