My recent battles with Samba have reminded me how much
time is needed to conquer a new technical frontier.
I can hack, but life keeps getting in the way and I need
more sleep than I used to -- man, that really cuts into
the hacking thing! -- so I am simplifying.
Charlie Bullen gave me a good deal on a tiny, quiet box
that can serve as a web server, firewall, etc. It is loaded
with something like RH6 and special Cobalt provisions
so that it boots up (slowly) in a pretty secure condition.
It has no display except a little LCD. It has a primary
ethernet facing the Net, and a secondary facing inside,
plus a serial port you can hook up to. SSH is not
currently installed.
OK, so I will never get around to using this thing.
I would want to upgrade all the software for security
purposes -- it's out there, apparently, although this is a
non-Intel box so there is a limited set of binaries available.
It could accommodate a compiler, but again it's a tad slow.
Someone who is comfortable with cross-compilation would
probably have more fun with this.
Charlie told me it was worth something like $2000 a few
years ago. Now it's not . . . So I will try to recoup most
of my investment by asking $80. That will go down over
time until someone can't resist this toy.
Below are some miscellaneous links I've collected.
Take care,
Vic
