Home Depot said they were going with Linux a few years ago but I
never saw any reports if they followed through or not. Lowes
definitely uses Linux (or KDE, at least) as I've seen that myself.

However, I didn't get the impression that examples of mass retailers
using Linux was what the original poster was looking for. I would
have guessed that he wanted examples of PLUG members using Linux for
POS in their own stores or perhaps have set up stores with that
capability.
