Vic, YMMV, but on my pc with Simply Mepis and KDE, I have an app launcher with
six little icons...1. Info center, 2. Mepis System Center, 3. KDE System
Guard, 4. Control Center, 5. user/~/meutils.desktop and 6. Terminal shell.

1. Is where your system information is located on an GUI. your sound card
should show up there and all the driver info is included. Also check your
Kmix to make sure your sound isn't muted.
4. is where you can config and test your audio HW and SW
